Exciting Opportunity for a Solicitor-Advocate in a Prestigious Boutique Criminal Law Firm

Our highly respected boutique criminal law firm, located in the heart of the CBD, is expanding. We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Solicitor-Advocate with a minimum of 2 years of advocacy experience to join our team. This role is to cover a maternity leave position, with flexibility in the contract term to suit the right candidate.

Key Selection Criteria:

Advocacy: 

  • Appear daily in the Magistrates’ Court and County Court, with travel to suburban and regional courts as required.
  • Advocacy experience in these jurisdictions is essential.
  • Confidently manage your own files and appear on behalf of other solicitors when needed.
  • Advocate persuasively and effectively for clients.

Communication:

  • Engage with clients from diverse backgrounds and with complex needs.
  • Communicate effectively with prosecutors, Victoria Police, the Office of Public Prosecutions, Court Coordinators, and Registry staff.
  • Manage a standard file load, take instructions, provide advice, and promote clients’ interests in dispute resolution discussions.

Knowledge of Criminal Law:

  • Strong understanding of relevant legislation, practice directions, and case law, including but not limited to: Criminal Procedure Act, Evidence Act, Sentencing Act, Drugs, Poisons and Controlled Substances Act, Crimes Act, and Summary Offences Act.
  • Familiarity with Magistrates’ Court and County Court processes.

Teamwork:

  • Work collaboratively in a supportive team environment while maintaining autonomy.
  • Seek and provide advice to colleagues as part of our strong team culture.
  • Significant scope to pursue legal areas of interest.

Role Overview:

  • Manage a diverse caseload of both Private and Victoria Legal Aid matters.
  • Appear in Children’s, Magistrates’, County, and Supreme Courts.
  • Opportunity to instruct in trials and handle your own indictable file load.
  • Based in the CBD, with regular appearances in suburban and regional courts.
