Suspension of Bail Reporting

In view of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the team at Leanne Warren and Associates have conducted many bail applications in recent weeks and we are in a position to advise yourself, your friends or family members on the best way to proceed.

Upon granting an application for bail, a Magistrate or Judge may impose a condition that you report or “sign in” at a local Police Station. This condition usually stipulates the days of the week you must report within a certain time frame and at a particular Police Station. E.g. you must report on Mondays and Fridays between the hours of 6 AM and 9 PM.

As a response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, at 24 April 2020, all bail reporting has been temporarily suspended in Victoria. The Victorian Government made this decision to avoid what they consider to be non-essential visits to Police Stations. They estimate that this suspension will affect approximately 3,000 people on bail and will reduce about 40,000 visits to Police Stations during this time.

A Magistrate or Judge may still impose a condition for reporting to commence upon the temporary restrictions on reporting being lifted.

If you require advice in relation to either Bail Applications or have queries about reporting on bail, please contact Leanne Warren & Associates today. First 30-minute consultation is free of charge.
